Who Is the MVP Health Program Best Suited For?
ACA stands for the Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare.” Healthcare programs that are ACA-compliant mean the program offers key provisions intended to extend health coverage to those who may previously have been uninsured and assist in lowering healthcare costs for millions of Americans.
Plans that are ACA compliant are eligible to include related benefits and savings such as:
- Premium subsidies
- Cost sharing subsidies
- Provide coverage for those with pre-existing conditions
Understanding what constitutes minimum essential coverage (MEC) can be challenging due to the often vague definitions. Generally, any employer-sponsored health plan qualifies as MEC. A MEC plan must also comply with the ACA’s Patient’s Bill of Rights. This includes covering pre-existing conditions, restricting when an insurance company can rescind or cancel coverage, and offering coverage without lifetime or annual limits.
MEC plans are only required to cover preventive care and adhere to the ACA’s Patient’s Bill of Rights. MVP plans provide additional coverage, including services beyond the basic preventive care offered by MEC. Meeting both MEC and MVP thresholds is crucial for employers to avoid significant tax penalties. While fulfilling MEC requirements helps avoid the Employer Shared Responsibility Part A penalty, offering an MVP option is also necessary to avoid Part B of the penalty.
